Saltburn-by-the-sea was founded by Henry Pease in 1861 and was originally the property where the pub, The Ship Inn, is located.

In 1861 Saltburn was classed as a hamlet, however by the 1901 census 2,578 people lived in Saltburn – this then grew to 4,745 in 1951, and by 2001 it was around 5,912.

- 1861 – Railway Station & Railway line built from Middlesbrough to Saltburn

- 1864 – The Promenade & Italian Gardens.
- 1865 – Rushpool Hall (1865)

- 1869 – Halfpenny Bridge
- 1870 – The Original Cliff Lift & Hoist
- 1872 – Railway Viaduct
- 1875 – Brockley Hall
- 1884 – The Cliff Railway
- 1884 – Assembly Rooms
- 1885 – Saltburn to Scarborough railway line was opened
- 1908 – The European land speed record was broken by Sir Algernon Guinness on Saltburn Beach.
- 1925 – Saltburn Theatre was built on the Pier
- 1947 – Saltburn Miniature Railway
